Questions and answers
How fast do pest problems get worse?
Fast. Night one, you may see a few ants or hear a mouse. Week one, they find food, water and a nest spot. Month one, the group has grown and moved deeper into walls. Mice breed quickly. Termites chew all day, out of sight. Help early, fix less. A smaller problem usually means a shorter job and a smaller bill.
What can I safely do myself before a provider arrives?
Do the simple things. Wipe up crumbs. Store food in sealed containers. Fix leaky pipes and drips. Take out trash often. Seal small gaps around pipes with caulk. Move firewood away from the house. Keep clutter off basement floors. These steps cut food, water and hiding spots. They help any treatment work better. They rarely solve a real infestation alone, though.
When is DIY not enough for pest control?
DIY falls short when pests keep coming back. Store sprays kill what you see. They often miss the nest. Some sprays even scatter ants or roaches into new spots. Call a provider for termites, bed bugs, rats, or any wildlife in walls or attics. Those jobs need trained skills, the right products and safe tools. Request a callback to check provider availability.
Is it safe to use pest products around kids and pets?
Read the label first. Follow it exactly. Never use more than it says. Keep kids and pets out of treated rooms until the label says it is safe. Store products up high and locked. Baits and traps can harm pets too. A provider can explain which products they use and what steps to take afterward. Ask before the visit.
Does homeowners insurance cover pest damage?
Often not. Many policies treat pests as a maintenance issue. Termite and rodent damage is commonly excluded. Some policies may cover sudden damage from a related event. Check your policy or ask your agent. Providers can often help document damage for a claim. Keep photos and any written reports. Do not assume anything is covered until your insurer confirms it.
How do I know if I have termites?
Look for mud tubes on foundation walls. Look for soft or hollow-sounding wood. Watch for discarded wings near windows in spring. Check basements and sill areas in older homes, where stone and block meet wood. Termites work quietly for months. If you see any sign, request an estimate. A provider can inspect and explain the options.
Can I remove a wild animal on my own?
Please don't. Raccoons, squirrels and bats can bite, scratch or carry disease. Trapping the wrong way can leave babies stranded in an attic. Some animals have legal protections, and rules vary by state. A wildlife provider knows safe, humane methods and how to seal the entry points. Keep kids and pets away from the area until then.
How much does an exterminator cost, and how do I compare quotes?
Typical U.S. costs vary by pest, home size and how bad the problem is. A basic visit often runs from about $100 to $300. Termite and wildlife jobs usually cost more. Ask each provider for a written quote. Compare what is covered, how many visits it includes, and what follow-up looks like. Request an estimate to start, with no obligation.
